Everton transfer rumours; Sardar Azmoun linked

Marcel Brands distanced Everton from speculation linking Zenit St Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun to the Premier League club before walking away from Goodison Park, speaking to Sport24.

With just one goal in their last four league games, the arrival of another centre-forward during the January transfer window may go some way to calming the tensions on the blue half of Merseyside.

Signing one, however, will be easier said than done.

Financial Fair Play concerns restricted Everton to a summer spend of just £1.7 million.

And unless there are takers for a number of Rafa Benitez’s fringe players, it’s not easy to see how the Toffees could finance a deal for Zenit St Petersburg’s £17 million-rated talisman.

90Min last week reported that Everton have shown an interest.

But, in one of his last acts as the club’s director of football, Marcel Brands issued a rather cutting response when asked about the propsect of Azmoun swapping St Petersburg for Gwadlys Street.

Will Everton sign a striker in the January transfer window?

“Everton already has four strikers: Tosun, Rondon, Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin. Do you think we are interested in another one?” said the former PSV Eindhoven talentspotter, who walked away from Everton on Sunday.

Now, Brands was hardly a popular figure amongst Everton supporters during the final few months of his three-year reign in England’s North West and such comments will not have enhanced his popularity.

After all, of the four ‘strikers’ mentioned by Brands, Richarlison is more comfortable out wide, Salomon Rondon has not scored a Premier League goal for the club and Cenk Tosun has played just six minutes of football all season long.

In Calvert-Lewin’s injury-enforced absence, Everton have looked toothless and devoid of any sort of cutting edge in the final third.

And Azmoun, with nine goals in 20 games, has scored comfortably more than Rondon, Tosun and Richarlison put together this season.

Azmoun has also been linked with Arsenal and confirmed in September that he had received ‘an offer’ from Tottenham Hotspur.
