Arsenal could make a bid for Renato Sanches in the coming weeks after making their interest known to the player’s representatives, Le10 Sport say.

What’s the story?

With the January transfer window set to open, Arsenal are now making plans behind the scenes.

And the latest reports in France suggest that Sanches is a player who is very much on their radar.

The Lille midfielder has actually been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium for some time now.

But Arsenal’s interest in him appears to be stepping up as the new year draws closer.

Lille would be willing to sell the Portuguese international mid-season providing they received a big offer.

But Arsenal will have to beat off competition from AC Milan if they are able to land the energetic central midfielder.

Sanches would fit in with Mikel Arteta and Edu’s recruitment policy at Arsenal.

Good signing?

He is still not the finished article, but has a very high ceiling and is regarded as a player with real potential for the future.

Indeed Carlo Ancelotti is among his admirers, having called him ‘amazing’ before, while Bayern’s official website claims he has a ‘rocket of a shot’.

His one previous stint in England came as a youngster with Swansea City where he failed to make much of an impact.

However, the Portuguese international has since gone away and revived his career, with his performances for Lille really catching the eye in recent times.

Interestingly, Sanches hinted over the summer that a move to the Emirates Stadium would appeal to him.

Gabriel urged him to ‘come to Arsenal’ on Instagram, to which he responded by writing: I’m waiting for your invitation’.

If the latest reports are to be believed, that invite could come sooner rather than later.

And it will be interesting to see whether Arsenal have the financial power in January to make an acceptable offer for the 24-year-old.

If he was to join the Gunners he could add further strength to a midfield department which already contains the likes of Granit Xhaka, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
