Premier League chairman Gary Hoffman resigns

Premier League chairman Gary Hoffman has resigned, The Athletic understands.

The Athletic revealed last month that some Premier League clubs wanted Hoffman to leave his position with the Premier League. It is now understood that Hoffman has resigned and is in the process of finalising his exit.

Hoffman was only appointed in April 2020 but is said to have struggled to win popularity during a turbulent 18 months.

There is a growing sense of dissatisfaction within the division towards the Premier League’s hierarchy following the Saudi Arabia-backed takeover of Newcastle being sanctioned.

That dissatisfaction is understood not to relate solely to the Newcastle situation — it is more a combination of various issues — but the recent events on Tyneside brought the grievances to a head.

Meanwhile, the Premier League are expected to announce a bumper new television deal for the United States later this week.
