Andrea Pirlo has already told Chelsea why they should secure £27m transfer for ‘complete player’

Chelsea have joined the race with Newcastle United to sign Juventus and France midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

That is according to Italian news outlet Calciomercato, who say that the Blues are planning to send Saul Niguez back to Atletico Madrid and cancel his loan spell at Stamford Bridge.

The Spanish midfielder has featured just twice for Chelsea in the Premier League since putting pen to paper on a season-long loan deal on transfer deadline day in August.

Now, with Saul apparently set to head back to Madrid, the European champions are now considering making a move for Rabiot, who sees his contract with Juventus reach its conclusion at the end of next season.

Newcastle are supposedly interested in the 26-year-old Frenchman, but Chelsea want to join the race for his signature when the January transfer window opens.

Rabiot, who is valued at £27million on Transfermarkt, is still seemingly a part of Juve’s plans, though, with the former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder featuring 11 times for the Italian club in all competitions so far this season.

His former Juve boss Andrea Pirlo was a huge fan of Rabiot and suggested that he has seen very few players stronger all-round than the midfielder.

“He is a complete player, I have rarely seen someone so strong both physically and technically,” Pirlo said to Sky Sports in November of last year.

“He doesn’t even know the potential for improvement he can have, and we work on the mental side of things to make him understand that he is a champion. He is improving game after game.”

Despite Rabiot being strongly linked with a move to the Premier League, the Frenchman has insisted he is happy with his situation at Juventus.

Speaking to TeleFoot, Rabiot said: “I’m happy in Turin. I see my future at Juventus, of course!”

This may come as somewhat of a blow to Chelsea, if they are indeed interested in the Juventus star’s services, but it would not be a huge surprise if his stance changes in the coming months.

Rabiot is not the only central midfielder Chelsea hold an interest in, with understanding that the Blues were eyeing Aurelien Tchouameni before Saul signed over the summer transfer window.

As well as this, Chelsea are long-term admirers of Declan Rice and understands the west Londoners could make a move for the West Ham United star at the end of the season.
