Barcelona handed major boost as six stars return to training ahead of Espanyol

Newly-appointed Barcelona boss Xavi Hernanez has, on Monday, been handed an altogether timely series of boosts on the personnel front.

Derby lies in wait

Xavi, whose Camp Nou comeback was made official earlier this month, will of course lead his new side into action for the first time this coming weekend.

On the back of the international break coming to a close, the Blaugrana will get their campaign back underway in a highly-anticipated derby showdown with Espanyol on Saturday night.

The clash marks an important one for Xavi even when putting the fierce rivalry between the two clubs aside, with Barca, as things stand, dwindling in the depths of mid-table in La Liga.

This comes owing to a dismal opening to the season under the watch of now-former boss Ronald Koeman.

All told, the Catalan giants are winless across their last four league outings, the latest of which saw the once widely-feared Blaugrana surrender a 3-goal advantage to eventually depart Celto Vigo with just a share of the spoils.

Pedri amongst returning group

In turn, it will no doubt come as a boost to not only the returning Xavi, but also Barca’s loyal fanbase, to hear of a series of altogether timely boosts on the personnel front.

As revealed in the Spanish press on Monday evening, no fewer than six players to have spent time on the treatment table in Catalunya of late today marked their returns to training.

The stars in question? Gerard Pique, Pedri, Nico, Eric Garcia, Sergi Roberto and Neto.

The options at the disposal of the new Blaugrana headmaster therefore look likely to be added to in considerable fashion on Saturday night.

On the flip side, joining long-term absentees Martin Braithwaite and Sergio Aguero on the sidelines for the derby are both Ansu Fati and Ousmane Dembele, whilst doubts remain over the participation of Sergino Dest.
