Aston Villa: Steven Gerrard close to becoming new manager
Steven Gerrard is close to becoming the new Aston Villa manager after breakthrough talks over the last 24 hours.
Villa had targeted the Rangers boss as soon as they fired Dean Smith on Sunday after a run of five consecutive defeats, and are now expected to get their man.
Owners Nassef Sawiris, Wes Edens and CEO Christian Purslow aimed to appoint a replacement by next week, insisting that they were checking out multiple candidates first.
It’s understood Gerrard, a leading contender from the start, could now even be confirmed by the weekend with Villa acting quickly.
A compensation package will not be an issue for the wealthy Premier League side.
Gerrard is expected to bring first team coach Michael Beale to Villa with him while discussions over other backroom members will continue over the next few days.
