Five players Manchester United can sign to save £286m in the January transfer window
The best teams plan ahead, leaving nothing to chance when it comes to team selections and transfers.
Though the January transfer window is up next, players who see their contract run out in the summer are free to talk to teams outside of their league from January 1.
Manchester United have the opportunity to acquire some world-class talent and signing these stars in January and having them arrive in June will save the club over £250million and get a head start on their summer targets.
Kylian Mbappe £144m
Nothing wrong with being adventurous and reaching for the stars.
Mbappe has been linked with a mega-money move to Real Madrid next summer but United should be in the market for a player of the Frenchman’s calibre.
Though United have invested heavily in their front-line over the past few years, signing Jadon Sancho for £73million from Borussia Dortmund and Cristiano Ronaldo for £12m from Juventus this summer alone, this is a signature the team cannot afford to not try and chase at the bare minimum.
Though it adds more competition to an already stacked left-wing position, Anthony Martial could well move on next summer and replacing him with Mbappe would be quite the achievement and upgrade.
Franck Kessie £49.5m
With Paul Pogba possibly leaving the club the summer, United will need a replacement.
United have seen first-hand just how good Kessie is when he faced them with AC Milan in last season’s Europa League and his performances in Serie A have made him one of the most highly sought after midfielders in world football.
Marcelo Brozovic £36m
Nemanja Matic is not getting younger and the club need a defensive midfielder to replace him. An argument could be made that they needed one years ago.
Brozovic helped inspire Inter Milan to the Serie A title last season and is out of contract at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old could prove to be a bargain solution to United’s defensive midfield problem.
Niklas Sule £31.5m
Raphael Varane’s summer signing from Real Madrid should not prevent United from signing another centre-back 12 months later.
Given that Solskjaer has often deployed a 3-5-2 formation, it would mean not playing Luke Shaw central.
It would be a signing of depth at first but given his quality, Sule would give Solskjaer a real headache in terms of who to start in a pair and if the choices are Varane, Sule and Harry Maguire, that’s an excellent decision to have to make on a week to week basis.
Or the Norwegian could start all three and sit back as his side keep clean sheet after clean sheet.
The Bayern Munich defender is out of contract in the summer and has already been linked with a move to Newcastle United.
Boubacar Kamara £25.2m
Even though Brozovic is on the list, that shouldn’t prevent them from double-dipping in the defensive midfield market and signing Kamara.
When Brozovic needs a rest, Kamara will be able to step in and United won’t need to abandon their formation.
At 21, United will be able to not rush him but with a Brozovic figure ahead of him in the pecking order, Kamara could prove to be a shrewd addition with the future in mind.
