Sergio Romero helps his Venezia side beat Jose Mourinho’s Roma

Ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero helped his Venezia side pull off a shock 3-2 win against his former manager Jose Mourinho.

The newly-promoted Serie A side came out on top against Roma, in what was a topsy-turvy match.

Venezia took an early third minute lead at the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo through Mattia Caldara.

But two quickfire goals from Eldor Shomurodov and Tammy Abraham on the stroke of half-time gave the Giallorossi the lead.

Not to be denied, Venezia came roaring back in the second half and turned the game around through a penalty from Mattia Aramu and the winner was tucked home by David Okereke.

Romero was booked in the 94th minute for time wasting, but he went on to win his second match with his new club, after beating Fiorentina on his debut (1-0).

The 34-year-old was given a 7.8 rating by SofaScore for his display against his former United manager, where he also reunited with his former Red Devils team mate Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was an unused substitute.

The Argentine made seven saves, six of which came from inside the penalty area and he also made two punches and one high claim.

Venezia’s number 88 had 51 touches and completed 21 of his attempted 33 passes (64%).

The win for Venezia moved them up to 15th in Serie A, whilst Mourinho’s men sit sixth, three points off Champions League qualification.

Romero made 30 appearances under Mourinho at United, most notably of which was the Europa League win against Ajax in 2017.
