Man City want Frenkie de Jong ‘swap’ if Raheem Sterling joins Barcelona and more transfer rumours
Manchester City are planning a swap deal that would see Raheem Sterling join Barcelona with Frenkie de Jong coming the other way, according to reports.
The forward has started just three times in the Premier League this season and, as a result, speculation is growing that he may look to leave the City in search of more minutes – with his current contract set to expire in just 18-months in 2023.
Barcelona have been repeatedly linked with Sterling, despite their financial problems, and El Nacional reports that they have asked City about his availability, as he would suit new-manager Xavi’s ideal formation.
It’s reported that while the Blues haven’t ruled out a transfer, they will not be giving him away for nothing and instead Guardiola has ‘proposed an exchange’ to president Joan Laporta.
De Jong hasn’t lived up to expectations since his big-money move from Ajax and it’s claimed that the Catalonians would now consider letting him leave.
Despite not being able to reach the form he showed in Amsterdam, it’s reported that Guardiola remains a fan of the player and believes he can get the best out of him again.
The report states that City value Sterling at 50 million euros, while Barca have a 70 million price tag on the Dutchman. As a result, any deal would see City still paying around 20 million euros as well as handing over Sterling in order to secure De Jong.
However, it’s concluded, no decision will be made on the 24-year-old’s future until Xavi has been able to run the rule over him.
City were interested in De Jong before he moved to the Camp Nou, but the club did not want to meet his wage demands.
Meanwhile, City have been linked with a bizarre move for Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette.
The Frenchman is out of contract in the summer and the Gunners are at risk of losing him for nothing. As a result, Calciomercato , via SportsMole, report that City will try and tempt them to sell in January.
City are in need of a striker after failing to replace Sergio Aguero in the summer but a move for the 30-year-old seems unlikely.
