Pundit demands Cristiano Ronaldo apology over doubts upon Manchester United return

Cristiano Ronaldo doubters owe the returning Manchester United sensation an overdue apology.

That’s the verdict from talkSPORT pundit and former Premier League striker, Gabby Agbonlahor, after Ronaldo hit two goals to save United – twice – during their Champions League draw with Italian opponents Atalanta.

Amid intense pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the aftermath of their heavy and humiliating 5-0 defeat to arch rivals Liverpool, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was on the scoresheet as United eased the situation by returning to winning ways against Tottenham.

It was a result which cost Nuno Espirito Santo his job with the north Londoners as Antonio Conte replaced him in the Tottenham dugout after, initially, being earmarked as a potential successor to Solskjaer.

Back at United, that man Ronaldo took centre stage, once again, with two midweek goals against Atalanta.

The 36-year-old has netted nine times in 11 appearances during his second coming at Old Trafford – although there has, bizarrely, been plenty of criticism for the Portugal captain during that time, as well.

According to Agbonlahor, though, that stance is seriously misguided.

He said: “Whenever they need a goal, he’s there, isn’t he? How many times are they going to need him to get them out of jail? Why is it always him that has to come up with a world class finish?

“Probably a lot of people need to apologise, really, about the way they spoke about Ronaldo, that he’s going to be the problem. He’s the one saving them, he’s not the problem. He’s the one getting them results, keeping them in the Champions League, keeping them in the race for the top four.”
