Moritz Seider named NHL ‘Rookie of the Month’ for October

Mortiz Seider’s long list of achievements continues to grow. The rookie defenseman has been named the NHL’s rookie of the month for October 2021.

Seider, who the Red Wings selected with the no. 6 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, has already established himself as Detroit’s top defenders. Through 8 games, the 20-year-old German rearguard has registered 8 points (all assists), and has averaged just under 22:30 of ice time.

Seider’s eight assists/points were the most ever by a Red Wings defenseman through his first nine career NHL games, ahead of Nicklas Lidstrom (1-6—7) and Per Djoos (0-6—6). Only seven other defensemen in League history have collected as many helpers through their first nine career games, including active blueliners Will Butcher (10), Cale Makar (8) and Zach Werenski (8).

Seider is the first Detroit player at any position to claim the honor since Dylan Larkin in November of 2015.

Red Wings rookie Lucas Raymond was also in the running for October’s rookie of the month after posting 9 points through 9 games. Other rookies considered for the honor were Tanner Jeannot (NSH), and Spencer Knight (FLA).
