Activision developing new Call of Duty mobile game

Activision has acquired mobile game developer Digital Legends. The Barcelona-based studio will support development on a currently unannounced mobile title that is set within the Call of Duty universe.

We don’t know much about this new Call of Duty mobile game except that it’s already in development at Activision’s recently established internal studio Solid State. Beenox and Activision Shanghai are also working on the project.

As mentioned Digital Legends is a studio that specializes in developing mobile video games. Among its rich catalogue of titles is Battlefield: Bad Company 2, a mobile port of EA’s Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

However, the studio is probably best known for its Respawnables mobile franchise which includes two titles: The Respawnables, a cartoonish third-person shooter with offline missions and online multiplayer, as well as the now defunct Respawnable Heroes, a 4v4 tactical PvP action title.

As it currently stands, Activision only has one notable mobile title set within the Call of Duty universe and that is Call of Duty Mobile. It’s basically the Call of Duty experience designed exclusively for mobile and includes modes and maps from Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. A 100-person battle royale mode was also recently added to the game. With Call of Duty Mobile already covering the traditional Call of Duty experience, what could this new mobile title possibly add to Activision’s portfolio?

Mobile is one of Activision’s core pillars for its Call of Duty franchise alongside the free-to-play battle royale game, Warzone (soon to become Warzone Pacific) and the annual premium titles, like this year’s Call of Duty: Vanguard (set to release on November 5). WIth mobile gaming only continuing to grow, it’s no wonder why Activision wants to put more resources towards that pillar.

Do you enjoy Call of Duty on mobile or do you prefer the more traditional console gaming experience?
